Top 5 movie cameos

Not much to say about this one. I promised it a few weeks back, so here it is.

Cate Blanchett – Hot Fuzz
For anyone who didn’t notice Cate Blanchett in Hot Fuzz, she plays Simon Pegg’s girlfriend near the start of the movie. This hits my top five because of the craziness of having the most famous person in the film (at the time, some of the others are better known now) being completely unrecognizable. Honourable mention should also go to Shawn of the Dead, when the gang meet their alternates, for cramming so many cameos into such a short scene.

Tom Cruise – Tropic thunder
His role is perhaps a little too substancial to really be called a cameo, but he only had a couple of scenes, so he just about scrapes in. Kudos to Tom Cruise for accepting such a minor role (presumably for a relatively minor paycheck), being willing to prosthetic himself up and for being absolutely hilarious.

Hugh Jackman – X-men First Class
To my mind, this is the perfect cameo. It’s short, funny, but does actually add something to the film (even if it’s just to further establish how long Wolverine has been kicking around).

Samuel L Jackson – Iron Man
The reason this cameo makes my top five is the importance it held for the entire Marvel Universe franchise. This was the first moment we got a real hint that Marvel were about to do something much bigger than anyone had done before. Cemented, of course, with Robert Downey Jr’s cameo at the end of Incredible Hulk.

Bill Murray – Zombieland
I’m always a fan of actors playing themselves (particularly in a slightly self-mocking way) and Bill Murray manages to hit all the right notes; mocking his involvment in Garfield was a nice finishing touch.
